As I read the the the five CS of cinematography. Continuity comes out. Then when related to the single pursuit of the artist, questions come up.
Yeah, to establish consistency for the larger project at hand, such as a storytelling as in comics or animation.
Yes, is it the key to the category of oneness? Nah. That's how one approaches continuity. It can change, Scott Mclouds understanding comics page 55-56 noted they have been changes in style in between projects that artists have done.

It's going to take some more soul-searching to find that category of ones. Understanding the visual style category, then bending the rules. So far I've come up with a cartoon. (Manga/anime sub-genre), Illustrative, live action and graphic design. These are some overarching style category of audience expectations I can think of to the top of my head. You can come with your own, to make sense of the world.
